How do I Download?
You need to be registered and logged in to download from Manga Traders. Once you do that you can download files in several ways:
If you know exactly what series you are looking for you can use the search box on the right panel of every page to find it. This search box only searches titles however. Click on the Search link in the menu bar near the top of the site to reach the full search page which will allow you to search through summaries, authors, artists, and more. The search options will return links to all series and/or individual files matching the terms you searched for. Clicking on a series result will take you to the series page in question. Clicking on a file result will immediately start a download.
NOTE:The search system will not accept search terms smaller than three characters. If you are looking for a series with a very short name, try browsing for it on the Extended Series List Page. Also, you may use quote marks to search for multi word terms exclusively (e.g. "One Piece").
If you are just looking for anything at all to read you can click the Browse Manga button on the menu bar:
Series are listed here in alphabetical order. You can easily navigate by using the letters at the top and the page number links. If you would like to refine your browsing more then try using the Extended Series List. This will allow you to change the order the series are displayed in to newest or highest rated series first, filter in or out specific genres, show only complete series, and more. If you know exactly what series you are looking for however it's probably best that you use the the search function.
To download from a series page just click any of the links at the bottom of the page:

Note: If you are using the 'Classic View' File grid (selected in your profile settings) the download links on series pages will look like this instead of the above:
When prompted by your browser (if at all) save the file anywhere you want.
The files you download will always be compressed archive files. They contain multiple separate files, the pages of the chapter or volume, grouped into one 'file' and compressed for ease of transfer. To view the pages inside an archive file you will need a program that understands the type of compression used to make the archive and knows how to retrieve the individual files inside. There are several options for this which are discussed in more detail in How do I open files downloaded from mangatraders.com?. If you're in a hurry thought we recommend 7-Zip which can be obtained from 7-zip.org. It is simple to use, free, and should open any file you can download from the site.

How do I Upload?
You need to be registered and logged in to upload to Manga Traders.
Please familiarize yourself with the uploading rules found here before you consider uploading.
Click "Upload Manga" on the right panel. This takes you to the upload page.

Chapters

Volume with chapter contents

Oneshots

Volumes with Specials/Extras/Abnormal Contents

As you can see above, the "One Shot" button can be used for manga that doesn't fit the mold of vXX cAA-BB. For example, if a volume contains one chapter in 5 parts, all indicated by letter, or includes special chapters not counted with the main story, you should indicate all of this in the series name. If you are uploading the only volume of a one volume manga in its entirety, then please use the Oneshot uploading type and add (Complete) to the Series Name. The Oneshot tag will be removed before the file is activated. Be aware, abusing this method to get around entering chapter info may be punished by loss of upload and/or download privileges. Please don't cheat.
If you feel that your file needs to be explained (e.g. "Previously uploaded volume has the wrong chapters")please do so in the "Comments to Staff" box.
After you click the button you will be asked where this file is located. Make sure this file is either a zip or rar format as the uploader will not accept anything else. Also make sure the images are either .png, .jpg, or .gif. Files with .PDF, .DB_Store, MACOSX or other image formats will not be accepted. Once you select a file it will begin uploading and a progress bar will appear below the button so you can monitor the progress of the upload.
The files will not appear on the site instantly; files must be activated by a staff member before they are available for download.

What happened to [INSERT SERIES]? MT used to have it but now I can't find it.
If we had a series but it was taken down, we were more than likely asked to remove it by an English manga distributor. If this is the case then that series will not be coming back so do not ask about it.
For a list of all the series we have removed to date click see the Manga Traders Series Takedown List.
-
What are One Shots?
Manga Traders defines One Shots as manga titles where the story is a single unbroken 'chapter'. The term has many shades of gray ranging from one chapter manga to one volume manga, including or not including compilations and more variations. But the bottom line is, if you download a one shot from this site you should expect to get something like a complete uninterrupted story all in one file with no separations or gaps.
- What are Genres?
-
What is the MT Rating?
The MT rating is our attempt to rank all the manga series by their popularity with users. It is currently calculated based on the number of downloads a series has, the number of people who have made that series a favorite, the number of people who are watching that series, and the average user rating that series has. The numbers themselves simply indicate the series' overall ranking compared to all the others on the site and tend to clump very close togeather. The rank of a series' MT rating is more reflective of how much users tend to favor it over others.
Note: The rantings are not calculated in real time. A rating of zero means a series was added after the last time the ratings were calculated.
-
Can I see series ranked by MT Rating?
Yes. Using the Extended Series List you can sort series by Title, Add Date, or Ranking.
You can also filter for specific genres or only series that are completely available on Manga Traders.
-
Why can I see series pages but no download links?
Your browser may not be displaying the 'Default View' File grid properly. This Grid requires JavaScript to be supported and allowed by your browser.
If you are not seeing any links under sereis pages while you are logged in then go into the settings tab on your site profile and check the box next to Show "Classic View" File Grid. With this box checked the links should appear for you. Be aware though that classic view frid is a less efficient interface. Unlike with the default grid you won't be able to sort links at the individual series page level. You will still be able to control the default sorting method for all series from your profile though.
We have received at least a few reports from people using all the major browsers saying that the new grid wouldn't show up for them. It has worked on every browser the staff has tried though so we can't figure out what caused their problems. If you uncheck the box and then look at a series page but see no file links then you've been affected by the same mysterious problem and will have to stick with the Classic View or try another browser. However, for any browser be sure to ensure that you have enabled javascript. If you've only tried to use one browser please try a few others like Opera or Firefox before giving up completely as the Advanced View system is faster and more efficient both for you and for the server.

What is my Watched List? How do I add series to it?
The watched list is a list of the most recently uploaded files in the manga series you have indicated you would like to 'watch' for new uploads.
Indicating you want to watch a series means that when a new file is added to that series, a link to that file will appear on your watched list, which is located on the right side of all main site pages. The side bar only shows the latest 5-20 files uploaded in your watched series. If you are watching several series and miss some there is also a tab on your profile page which contains links to every file added to any watched series list in the last 45 days.
You can choose whether or not to display your watched list on the right panel as well as how many files you would like it to show by editing your main site profile page.
Watched Lists are also accessible via RSS using the url http://www.mangatraders.com/rss/watched/userid where your userid is the number that appears after http://www.mangatraders.com/profile/ when you are on your profile page.
To add a series to your watched list go to the series page and click the link that says "(Add to watch list)"
-
What does 'Scanslation Status' field on a series page represent?
The Scanslation Status field is meant to indicate the known availability of a series in English. The acceptable options are Unknown, Ongoing, Dropped, and Complete. If every volume/chapter of a series can be obtained from Manga Traders then that series' status should have an icon like this
next to it. This icon can only be added by staff members though. However we can't keep track of everything so if you see a series that you know is both complete and fully available on Manga Traders but is not marked with the icon let one of the Website Staff members know.
- Ongoing means the series has at least on active scanslator that has released something for the series in the last few months.
- Dropped means no scanslators are known to be working on the series or there hasn't been a release in several months.
- Complete means the entire series has been scanslated.
-
Why won't the upload page let me press the "Select File and Upload" button ?
Because you hadn't filled out all the necessary information. Either you didn't fill out the form properly or your computer simply can't respond to flash events properly. The system works, if you fill in the requisite information the button will be triggered to activate. If it's not working just for you there is something fishy going on with your computer that is stopping the message from getting through.
-
Why are some file links crossed out?
File links that you have initiated downloads for will show up as crossed out. This is to let you keep track of what you have downloaded and what you haven't. If you don't like the cross out effect, you can edit your main site profile settings to show an icon next to previously downloaded files or turn off the notification feather completely. To select the effect you want, edit the "Mark previously downloaded file links?" dropdown on the settings tab of your main site profile page.
File Questions
-
Why was my file deleted/rejected?
There are a number of reasons we might chose to reject a file:
- The file was already on the site (possibly under a different name, please check for alternative spelling with a site such as mangaupdates.com)
- The file had a bad filename. Uploaded files should include the name of the manga, (an abbreviation will do if it's obvious enough), and numbers indicating chapters and/or volume. Anything named simply vol 1.zip will be deleted without review.
- We deemed the file unsuited for sharing on MT (we do accept adult manga which may include some sexual scenes, homosexual pairings, or other mature themes, but we do not accept flat out hentai (most/all pages dedicated to depicting sex) or manga with themes we deem unacceptable.
- It was an one shot or one volume manga split into chapters, such titles should always be uploaded as one file.
- It wasn't actually manga (American Graphic Novels are cool and all...but they aren't really manga, even if a japanese person helped create them). Put them on sendspace or something and post a link in the forums if you want to share them that badly.
Reasons for a file being removed after it's been activated include:
- The file was a chapter that was replaced by a volume.
- It was missing pages or whole chapters.
- The file had been corrupted, and began to give away 404 errors.
- It was deemed in retrospect that we didn't want the file on the site. We reserve the right to refuse any file we feel is inappropriate.
-
Manga Traders hosts compressed archive files of both zip and rar compression. Most operating systems can understand zip files on their own, however to open rar files an external program is usually needed. If you do not already have any software that can understand rar files then you'll need to download some. There are many programs out there capable of extracting rar files such as:
If you don't like one of the above choices there are other programs. Try a google or wikipedia search for "rar file extraction" and look for others.
Alternatively if you don't want to worry about extraction at all there are programs that can display the images stored inside of a zip or rar archive without you having to extract the files at all. Some examples include:Some common shorcomings with these types of programs is that if a file has not been packed well and the pages inside the archive don't sort properly the programs may not offer you the ability to read the file out of order easily. Also, if there are nested archives inside a file a viewer program may ignore them instead of digging into them looking for more images. It is for this second reason that Manga Traders does not allow the upload of files with nested archives. Unfortunately detecting nested archives is much easier than detecting improper sorting inside the archive so even if you use a viewer it's strongly recommended that you have some software capable extraction on hand in case you need to repack a volume.
For you Mac users you might try:- The Unarchiver -OR-
- Stuffit Expander - Note: The free version only unpacks.
Mac users who upload, please be aware that directories on Mac OS tend to contain metadate files, and sometimes folders that are usless if not using a Mac. If you create archives on a Mac please get rid of these extraneous files (.DB_Store, MACOSX_, etc) before uploading the archive to MT.
-
When will the next chapter/volume of [INSERT SERIES] be uploaded?
We don't know; MT only hosts scanslations. We don't actually translate or scan them.
Additionally, even if a given chapter/volume has been released, until someone from the community gets their hands on it and uploads it we won't have it. This means that asking when a given manga series is going to get updated is probably not going to yield an answer. Our suggestion is to either go to scanlators' websites and ask there (which most scanlators will frown upon) or search for new releases on your own (which you could then upload to Manga Traders should you feel inclined to do so), or simply wait for someone else to obtain and upload the latest chapter/volume to MT.
-
Why is there a no archives within archives rule?
Programs like CDisplay can't read images that are in archives within archives. In addition, having to extract through layer upon layer of files is a hassle and not something we want to put our users through.
-
What should I do if I download a file with archives inside it?
The rule about no archives within archives came late to Manga Traders but it does apply retroactively. The staff tries to replace as many as possible but there are only a few of us and there are still many files that break the rule floating around, they ALL need to be replaced. Any file that contains archives within is fair game to be reuploaded (even files uploaded by moderators). Reuploaded files should be repacked according to the Repacking Guide and reuploaded according to the Upload Rules. As long as the reason is indicated in the comments to staff box the old file will be removed and the new file will take it's place.
If you aren't willing or able to upload the file please use the Report system to let the staff know that the file needs to be replaced. Be sure to indicate that the file has archives inside it in the comments.
-
What does it means when a file has an "ALL" label next to it?
Seeing this icon,
, next to a file means that the file is currently located on all of our file servers, not just one. If you download such a file you will randomly be assigned a server to attempt a download from. The current traffic level of each server will weight the outcome towards the less busy servers.
Please note that the randomizer can not do any checking to determine what servers you are currently downloading from. You may be assigned a server that you already have a download in progress on in which case your download will fail and you will have to retry.
General Use Questions
-
How do I change my password or email address?
Your main site and forum accounts are directly linked, however the link does not work both ways. You can only change your password and/or e-mail address on the Settings tab of your site profile. This change will be reflected on both the main site and the forums.
Because of the link between the main site and the forums you should never log in or out directly via the forums. Always use the main site, which will automatically log you in to the forums as well.
-
What are RSS feeds and how do I subscribe to the MT RSS feeds?
RSS (which, in its latest format, stands for "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually. RSS content can be read using software called a "feed reader" or an "aggregator"(most Browsers are this). The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.
Our RSS Feed allow you (in browsers that have the RSS ability) to display the latest uploads in a series. This is a great tool in tracking your favorite series without the need to even visit Manga Traders on a daily basis (of course we know you will anyway). To use it on the site, simply click the RSS icon next to the series name when you are viewing the series information and you're set.
-
How can I see all the files uploaded on a given day?
To view all the files uploaded on a daily basis, click the Daily Uploads link on the main site. To view uploads from previous days add the date to the end of the Daily Uploads URL in the form yyyy-mm-dd.
-
Is there a way to see which files I have uploaded/downloaded?
On series pages any file that you have clicked on will show up with a line through it by default. You can disable this this effect or display an icon after links you have already downloaded instead of crossing out the file name by editing your profile settings. Please be aware that the detection system for this effect is based off of clicks not completed downloads so it can not guarantee that you actually obtained the file, only that you, or someone using your account, tried to download it.
You can also go to your main site profile page and look at the downloads or uploads tab. These tabs show the last few thousand downloads or uploads you have initiated. This information can be displayed publicly if you wish but is private by default. To make it visible to others check the appropriate boxes on your profile settings page.
Technical Questions
-
Can I use a download manager to speed up or pause then resume my downloads?
For Speed: No. Every user is allowed one connection per download server at any given time. Download managers usually try to download files in pieces, opening multiple connections simultaneously and resuming the download at a point further ahead than where the initial connection currently is. We view this as cheating and so the servers actively block multiple connections from forming to the same ip address.
For resuming: No (probably). The true download urls that the links on the site resolve to are dynamically generated when a user clicks on a link and expire after a few minutes. Resuming a download is generally accomplished by reconnecting to a URL and requesting that the server start sending the file in question at some offset from the beginning of the file. Because our download URL's are dynamically generated and expire quickly it is unlikely that attempting to resume a paused download will work properly.
For any other reason: You can try to set your download manager software to obey our restrictions, but Manga Traders does not officially support download manager software and we will not help troubleshoot download manager related issues in the official site support thread.
A note on download speeds:
Each download server has a set maximum bandwidth that it will try to distribute as evenly as possible to all users currently downloading. If you are one of 100 people downloading off of a download server you will be able to download at up to 1/100th the maximum capacity of the server. If there are 200 users downloading from a server each user is limited to no more than 1/200th of the maximum server capacity and so on. Generally three download servers will carry between 100-400 concurrent downloads, while the other two will carry between 50-100. If you happen to try and download something when you're person #400 of 400 you will get a much slower speed then if you were person #50 of 50 on a different server; that's just the way it works.
Additionally, there are several factors that will prevent a user from being able to use all the bandwidth that the server would normally reserve for them, including distance, internet service provider settings, and general internet congestion between the user and the server (people in Australia or Southeast Asia are not likely to get very high speeds no matter how few people are downloading due to the distance between them and the servers). For this reason the server will take away some of the equally allocated bandwidth if it detects that a user's connection is unable to utilize it and spread it among everyone else.

What does "You have reached your connection limit for this server" mean?
Getting this message means you were trying to download too many files off the same server. We currently have 5 download servers available for all users, dl1, dl2, dl3, dl4, and dl5. Each server allows only one connection per ip address. What this means is that if you want to download several files at the same time you may or may not be able to depending on which server the files are on.
If one is on dl1 and another is on dl2 you can download both at the same time. If both files are on the same server however you can't download both at the same time.
Canceling or completing a download you're already getting from that server will remove the problem. However keep in mind that you can't click the same link more than once every ten seconds or so even if you got a connection limit message when you first clicked it.
Example: You start downloading the first volume of a manga you're curious about, as it turns out this volume is on dl2. As the volume gets going you notice a new chapter of your favorite manga has been uploaded and you click the link in your watch list. Unfortunately for you that file was also on dl2 and so you receive a message instead of a download prompt. You think, hmm I can only download one file at a time from dl2 so I'll cancel this volume download and get that chapter I really really want to read. But, the time between clicks limit is independent of the server connection limit. This means that even if you cancel your previous download you still aren't going to be able to attempt to download that new chapter again for another ten seconds.
Note: As mentioned before these limits are based on ip address not user account. For that reason if you use a proxy service, dial-up, or some method of connecting to the internet where you share an ip address with many others it is possible that you will cross paths with another user who is downloading a file at the same time as you with the same ip. If this happens you will see the message that you are downloading from the server even if you are not. The only thing you can do in this situation is try and wait for the other person to finish and get a download started yourself.
-
Why do I get the message "Your downloads have been Throttled" when I try to download?
This message appears if you try to download the same file twice in the space of ten seconds. It is there to prevent people from spamming download links. The throttling message and download counter are both triggered based on your mouse clicks. They do not notice if your download is slow to begin or fails or is canceled. If your profile says you have X downloads that means you've clicked on a download links X times. It's possible that you clicked on the same download link X times but the counter won't care. Similarly if you click on a download link but get impatient and click again you will be informed that you tried to download the file already and will have to wait ten seconds before you can try again.
-
Why won't my download start?
Downloads that do not start properly can be caused by a number of issues. The easiest way to tell that the problem you're facing is is to wait a few seconds and try again. If the download fails twice or more in a row then it's possible there's something wrong with the server the file is on. If the server is ocompletely offline there should be a red message indicating this on the side bar inform you of this.
If there is no server offline message but you can't get a particular file to download use the report button next to the file to inform the staff. Be sure to include as much detail as you can about what you tried and what happened when you submit the report.
-
What does it mean when I see "Error #2308" when I am uploading?
Error #2038 is a generic error that means something went wrong with your upload. It can be caused by a number of issues. If you are receiving numerous #2038 errors when you try to upload files, regardless of file size, time of day, etc then you may be experiencing router problem. You can try disabling other things that might be using up upload bandwidth or connections like torrents or streams. Beyond that or restarting your router there's not much else we know of that can improve your odds of uploading successfully.
NOTE: If you get this error once just try uploading the file again, things can go wrong randomly and corrupt an upload from time to time. However if you see this error repeatedly it means there is probably something wrong with the connection between your computer and our server that is stopping the upload from completing. Whatever the issue is it is likely not related to something changing on our server but something changing between your computer and our server. In situations where this is not the case we will announce a disruption in uploads on the front page.
Forum Questions

What do the titles under forum avatars mean?
Your title indicates what member group you are in. For non-staff members, member groups are based on how many posts you have made. The only non-staff title that is not based on the post count is Donator, which is given to the users who have donated at least $20 to Manga Traders over the course of their membership.

MT Helpers assist the staff by doing things that anyone could do that the staff know need to be done but do not have the time to fix themselves. MT Helpers do not have any special privileges or powers beyond that of a normal user but they have access to the staff's private information about the state of the site, and they have accepted the responsibility to try and fix things. They are usually given assignments to fix things like improper uploads, missing or erroneous Series Information, etc.
Forum Moderators work on the forums, enforcing rules and keeping things neat and clean as well as helping people find information.
Website Staff are moderators on the main website, approving, renaming and moving files as well as updating summaries and dealing with issues relating to files; Website staff can also do everything Forum Moderators can do.
Administrators have control over the forums and the site and can change the way they actually look and function, like creating new boards for threads to go in and deciding what options are available to users. They can also do everything Website Staff and Forum Moderators can do, as well as promoting users to the previously mentioned positions.

How do I add a forum avatar?
In the forums go to your Profile (in the upper menu) and then click on "Forum Profile Information" (along the left side). There are three options for adding a forum avatar.
- Use an avatar provided by Manga Traders from the box next to "Personalized Picture."
- Find a link to the image you want to use as an avatar, then paste the link into the "I have my own pic" field.
- If the image is on your computer use the "I will upload my own picture" option.
After you have selected your avatar, click the "Change Profile" button to update your profile.
NOTE: Avatars cannot exceed 100x100 pixels in size. -
How do I add an image to my forum signature?
To have an image in your signature you need to have something like this typed in the Signature box in the Forum Profile Information of your Forum Profile:
[ img ] URL address of the image here [ /img ]
Take out the spaces between the brackets to make it work.
NOTE: Forum signatures may not exceed 125 pixels high by 500 pixels wide. Only one image is allowed (regardless of size) and it cannot be animated.
-
Why don't all my posts increase my post count?
Posts are not counted in all boards on the forum. Posts made in the "MT Tournaments" Board, the "Fun, Games, & Miscellaneous" Board, or the "Random Ramblings" Board will not count towards a user's visible post count. The true number of posts that have been made by a user can still be discerned by looking at their post history in their profile.
-
Why doesn't the forum search work?
Because Aftershock refuses to make the changes required to fix it. He knows what the problem is but he won't fix it because of what the fix would require. You'll just have to deal with it.

What is Manga Traders?
Manga Traders.com is site dedicated to making English translated manga available to the world. It was founded by Aftershock, who wanted to give something back to the manga community by providing a simple, effective way for people to obtain translated manga for free. In the past it was difficult for a person to find different manga series as they were spread all over the net. The goal of Manga Traders is to bring all translated manga together in one place so people can find what ever they are looking for in one location.
Initially Manga Traders was a glorified dumping ground. The few staff members added whatever manga they saw fit to share and users would come and download them. But as time wore on and more and more manga became popular it was decided that the staff alone was not sufficient to obtain and upload all the titles available or desired. Thus the site was reformed into a true trading center. In order to live up to the title of traders, as well as take slack off of the staff, it was decided that any user would be allowed to upload any manga they wished as long as it was translated into English. In this way Manga Traders has grown as more and more as rare or obscure manga are brought to us by users from all over the world.
By allowing users to share their manga, every user of the site is exposed to nearly everything the world of manga has to offer. With the addition of forums people can talk about the manga they obtain from the site and offer suggestions to one another about what may interest each other.

Who are the Staff?
The Staff is made up of 4 different positions.
First are the Admins. These are the guys that do the major changes to the site like design, coding, and Forum Administration. This category also includes the Founders. These are the people you don't go to with your little issues as they mostly have better things to do (better as in bigger, not better as in your question isn't worth beans).
Second are the Website Staff, These staff members are those that tirelessly work on the files you see on the front page. They approve your uploads, manage the categories and look after the Reports. These staff members the ones that know how to answer your questions dealing with the files on our site. Web Staff also moderate the Forums.
Third, there are the Forum Moderators. These staff members look after the dealings of the forum. They make sure the posts and threads that members start follow what is set out in our forum rules. Their experience means they can answer just about any question you might have.
Fourth are the Helpers. MT Helpers assist the staff by doing things that anyone could do that the other staff know need to be done but do not have the time to fix themselves. MT Helpers do not have any special privileges or powers beyond that of a normal user but they have access to the staff's private information about the state of the site, and they have accepted the responsibility to try and fix things that are known too need fixing. They are usually given assignments to fix things like improper uploads, missing or erroneous Series Information, etc. -
What is Manga Traders' history?
Manga Traders doesn't have much of a history other then being a manga site. The first design of MT was nothing more then glorified dumping ground. It wasn't till Design 2 that the site began accepting files from users themselves. The current version is taking that farther by making more of a user driven site bringing everyone together.
-
Can I delete my account?
Manga Traders does not delete accounts. If you don't want to use your account anymore then stop using it. If you don't want your email address visible to the staff, change it, then stop using your account.
-
If I can't delete my account, then can you guys delete it?
As was stated before, Manga Traders does not delete accounts.
The point of this FAQ post was two-fold. First it is meant to indicate that accounts will not be deleted at the request of users and second it is meant to encourage users not to inquire further into the matter as the answer will not be changing.
So again, no user account on MT will be removed. Period. If you don't like it stop using it. If you don't want your email address visible to the staff, change it, then stop using your account.
