Ok, to make this simple....
There are two kinds of gods or goddesses or w/e, and they are at a war. But they are so stupidly strong, if they fought each other; the planet would cease to exist. So each of the god things choose a human champion and funnel some of their powers into them, and have the humans fight their war for them.
Our main character isn't suicidal, but he's close. A run of the mill depressed guy, that you just can't not like. Honestly, he's so cliche that he's freaking awesome.
*recommended for anyone who likes fighting and weird powers
